All of the members of the Provincial Priory of Northumberland were shocked to learn of the sudden and unexpected death, at the age of 65 years, of one of our most loved and respected Knights, Philip Appleby. Phil was on holiday with his fianc\u00e9e in Israel \u2013 something he considered to be a \u201cpilgrimage\u201d \u2013 when he suffered a fatal heart attack.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Phil\u2019s involvement in masonry was huge and he was a keen and committed member of many, many Orders and units throughout Northumberland.

He was initiated into Freemasonry in Percy Lodge No 1427 in March 1988, but spending a lot of his time working in London he joined several Lodges down there \u2013 Stamford Hill Lodge No 5113; Percy Lodge No 198 and Old Bedfordian Lodge No 4732. He also joined the Duke of Connaught Lodge No 2940 meeting in Sri Lanka in 2004, remaining a subscribing member till his death.

He was Master of Percy Lodge in 1994, as well as Master of Percy Lodge in London twice, in 2004 and 2019. He also took the Chair of Old Bedfordian Lodge in 2004. His service was recognised by the Provincial Grand Lodge of Northumberland with appointment to Provincial Junior Grand Deacon in 2003; and three promotions, to Past Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works in 2010; Past Provincial Grand Registrar in 2015 and Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 2019. He was also appointed to London Grand Rank in the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London in 2016.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

He was exalted into Percy Royal Arch Chapter No 1427 in 1990, but when that Chapter closed he joined Northumberland Chapter No 685. He was a dedicated Chapter mason, taking the Chair of First Principal in Percy Chapter three times, in 1998, 2002 and 2006; and in Northumberland Chapter twice, in 2017 and 2021. He held Acting rank in Provincial Grand Chapter as Provincial Deputy Grand Registrar in 2003 before promotion to Past Provincial Grand Scribe Nehemiah in 2008.
He joined the Knights Templar when he was installed a Sir Knight in Royal Kent Preceptory No 20 in January 2000. He acted as Eminent Preceptor in 2017, after which he was appointed to the Acting rank of Provincial Aide-de-Camp in 2018.
He was a Mark Master Mason in the Province of Durham, being advanced into the Ambrose Crowley LMMM No 1269 in 1998; was its Master in 2009; and appointed as a Provincial Grand Steward in 2013. He consequently joined the Durham Lodge of Provincial Grand Stewards in 2014 and went through the Chair of the Lodge in 2018. He was promoted to the rank of Past Provincial Grand Junior Overseer in 2021.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

He was elevated in the Order of Royal Ark Mariner in Clavering RAM Lodge No 896 in 1999; Commander for two years in 2005 and 2006; and joined Farne RAM Lodge No 1540 in 2019.
He was a stalwart of Royal Kent Chapter Rose Croix No 8 in the Ancient and Accepted Rite; was Sovereign in 2012; and acting as Treasurer at the time of his death. He held the 30th Degree in the Order.

He joined the Red Cross of Constantine when he was installed in Bishop Acca Conclave No 333 in 2001, but he also joined Royal Kent Conclave No 154 in 2010. He acted as Sovereign of the latter for two years in 2014 and 2015; and he was Sovereign of Bishop Acca at the time of his death.
He joined Royal Kent Tabernacle T.I. in the Order of Knight Templar Priests in 2005; was High Priest in 2020; and had just received his first Grand College appointment to Past Grand Banner Bearer in 2022.
He was an active member of many other Orders \u2013 the Allied, Order of the Secret Monitor, Scarlet Cord, Royal and Select Masters and the Order of St Thomas of Acon, and he held high rank in them all.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A \u201cRoyal Kent Man\u201d through and through, his tragic and untimely death is widely lamented across our Province, nationally and internationally, and he will be sorely missed in all those Orders and units of which he was a member.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
