Very Eminent Knight John Dunlop, P.Gt.Reg.
17 June 1929 – 25 January 2013
It is with great sadness that the Provincial Priory reports the passing of Very Eminent Knight John Dunlop.
Bro John Dunlop was initiated into Freemasonry in the Heart of Glendale No 4005 in January 1956. He was Master of the Lodge in 1968 and subsequently honoured by appointment in Provincial Grand Lodge to the rank of Past Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works in 1979.
Promotion, in 1986, to the rank of Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden, was followed by appointment in Grand Lodge to Past Grand Standard Bearer in 1990.
He was, for thirty years, a member of the Northumbrian Masters Lodge No 3477.
In the Royal Arch he was exalted in the Chapter De Sussex No 406 in 1974 but in 1998 transferred to the Berwick-upon-Tweed Chapter No 393, remaining a subscribing member up until the time of his death. His appointment in 1987 in Provincial Grand Chapter to the rank of Acting Provincial Grand Sword Bearer was a fitting reward for his dedication to the Order.
In the Knight Templar Order he was installed a Knight in Lindisfarne Preceptory No 226 in February 1964, meaning he was only a year short of achieving a Golden Jubilee.
In 1994 he was a Founder member of Northanhymbre Preceptory No 590, and the following year helped to Found the Northumbria Guards Preceptory No 600.
He was Preceptor of Lindisfarne twice, in 1974 and again in 1998, and Preceptor of the Guards Preceptory, also in 1998.
For his service to our Order he was promoted in Provincial Priory to Past Provincial Constable and in 1989 had first appointment in Great Priory to the rank of Past Great Aide-de-Camp, before two promotions to Past Great Herald in 1999 and then Past Great Registrar in 2006.
Having devoted almost fifty years to our Templar Order, his passing was greatly mourned by all the Knights of Northumberland.
