Synopsis of the Ceremony of Installation as a Knight Templar

The Ceremony in quite unlike any ritual of any Order in the World. Analysis of the Order shows that it embodies all the features of a complete Rite of Initiation, that is, Tyling, Proper preparation, Ritual Garments, Pilgrimage, Warfare, Penance, Death, Rest, and Refreshment, new name, Rebirth, Enthronement, Proclamation, and the Long Journey Home across the Middle Sea. This is symbolism of a very high order which has survived the storms since the Order’s inception.

Admission

The Candidate seeks refuge as a Pilgrim, is refreshed with bread and water and questioned about his faith.

Pilgrimage

As a proof of his Faith the Candidate is enjoined a seven year pilgrimage.

Obligation

The Pilgrim takes an Obligation on the Holy Gospels and is admitted as a Novice of the Order, being clothed, and armed as a Crusader and entrusted with the Sign and Word.

Warfare

The Novice is directed to perform a seven years warfare on completion of which he assists the Marshal to unveil the Cross.

Charge

The Novice is addressed on the significance of the stages of the Ceremony.

Penance

The Novice undertakes a year of penance and mortification.

Meditation

Having been entrusted with the Casual Sign and Grand Password of the Order, the Novice retires to meditate on the Ceremony and to prepare for Knighthood.

Re-admission

The Novice is re-admitted and refreshed with the Cup of Memory.

Presentation of the Mystical Stone

The Companion-in-Arms signs his initials on the Mystical Stone and is given the Sacred Word.

Investiture

The Companion-in-Arms is escorted to the Investiture as a Knight of the Order, clothed, and armed as such, and entrusted with the Grand Sign, Grand Grip and Grand Word of the Order. On being escorted to his seat in the Preceptory he is proclaimed and saluted.

Address

The newly installed Knight is given an explanation of the Symbols of the Order, after which as a Brother-in-Arms, he is escorted to take place amongst the ranks of his Brother Knights.

Qualifications for Membership

As an intimate connection has long existed between the Orders of the Temple and Freemasonry, candidates for admission into this Order must be:


  • Subscribing members of a Craft Lodge and,
  • A Royal Arch Chapter and,
  • Must be a Christian who professes the Doctrine of the Trinity.

Required Regalia

The regalia required for admission is: 


  • A white tunic with red Latin cross

  • A white mantle with a red cross pattée

  • A pair of black gloves

  • A black sash

  • A red cap 

  • A brown belt with frog

  • A ceremonial sword 

  • Two jewels are also required – a red Templar cross with the ribbon of the Order and a Knight’s Star
  • A further jewel – a Malta cross – is required when a Knight is admitted into the Order of Malta, along with a black hat, black mantle and red tunic, both with emblazoned with the white cross of the Order
