Eminent Knight Selby Adamson Trotter, P.Prov. Gt. Chamb.
7th October 1944 – 20th February 2023
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Eminent Knight Selby Adamson Trotter, Past Provincial Great Chamberlain, of Prior’s Haven Preceptory No 522 on 20th February 2023 at the age of 78 years.
Selby was initiated into Freemasonry in Lindisfarne Lodge No 2762 on 24th November 1976 and was Master of the Lodge in 1988. He also became a Founder member of Bretwalda Lodge No 9007 in November 1981, and faithfully served both his Lodges until his death.
For his service to the Craft, he was first appointed to the rank of Past Provincial Assistant Grand Standard Bearer in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Northumberland in 1997, before two promotions to Past Provincial Grand Sword Bearer in 2003 and then Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 2017.
He was exalted into the Royal Arch in Benebalcrag Chapter No 2762 in December 1991 but elected not to go through the Principals Chairs.
He did, however, give sterling service to the Chapter in other capacities and, in 2018, he was appointed as an Acting Provincial Grand Steward of the Provincial Grand Chapter of Northumberland.
In our Order of the Temple, Selby was admitted a Knight into The Prior’s Haven Preceptory No 522 on 21st February 2012.
He took his Malta Degree in September of that year and, in April 2019 he was installed as Eminent Preceptor of Prior’s Haven Preceptory.
He was one of a number of “covid Preceptors”, holding the office for two consecutive years during the pandemic, relinquishing the office to his successor in April 2021.
Very sadly, age and ill health began to take its toll. He was appointed to the rank of Past Provincial Great Chamberlain of the Provincial Priory of Northumberland in September 2022 but he was not well enough to be invested.
His passing will be mourned by all his Brother Knights in his Preceptory as well as by all who knew him in the Province of Northumberland,
Kevin Stannard
Provincial Prior
