It is with the greatest regret that we report the death, on 22nd February 2023, of Eminent Knight Patrick John Hannon, Past Provincial Registrar, at the age of 80 years.
John, as he was known to everyone, became a Freemason when he was initiated into Hadrian Lodge No 6772 on 3rd May 1985. He was a diligent and hard working member of the Lodge, taking the Master’s Chair for two consecutive years in 1992 and 1993.
Subsequently appointed to Provincial rank as Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon in 2000, he was promoted six years later to Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden before further promotion to the highest Provincial rank attainable – Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden – in 2016.
In addition to his service to Hadrian Lodge, he became a Founder member of the Lodge of Sportsmen No 9823 in 2007, serving as its Charity Steward throughout his membership.
In the Royal Arch, he was exalted in Novocastrian Chapter No 3361 in May 1988 and, after the Chapter was erased in 2014, joined Carliol Chapter No 5419 and acted as its First Principal in 2018.
In our own Knight Templar Order, he was installed a Knight in Templar Segedunum Preceptory No 586 in June 1997, subsequently becoming a Knight of Malta in May 1999.
After serving as Constable in the Preceptory, he was installed as the Eminent Preceptor on 31st January 2005.
Indeed, such was his devotion to the Order, he subsequently served a second term as Preceptor in 2017, and had volunteered to act as the Preceptory Guard the year before his death.
His service to the Preceptory and to the Order led to his first appointment to Provincial rank as Acting Provincial Aide-de-Camp in 2006, followed by promotion to Past Provincial Standard Bearer (B) in 2010 and further promotion to Past Provincial Registrar in 2014.
Sadly, in his later years, he battled ill health in the form of brain tumours that precluded him being able to drive. Living in Sedgefield in Stockton-on-Tees, his attendance was severely curtailed by this illness, though he remained adamant that, should he become well enough in future, he would willingly take on any office necessary, should the Preceptory need him to do so.
Sadly, his illness proved too much and he died peacefully having given unstinting service to his Preceptory and his fellow Knights over so many years.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
